KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Ball State women's golf team opened with a score of 326 on a cold, wet day Sunday at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic.
The Cardinals started the tournament with half of the field at Osprey Point Golf Club. The other half played its opening round at Oak Point Golf Club. They will flip courses for Monday's second round. The 40-team field is billed as the largest in collegiate golf.
Ball State is in 29th place as a team. North Florida leads the way at 297 (+9), while Troy (+10), College of Charleston (+12), Western Carolina (+12) and Chattanooga (+13) round out the top five.
The Cardinals counted a pair of 80s from Jenna Hague and Allison Lindley and a pair of 83s from Meghan McDougall and Kelsey Sear on day one. Hague and Lindley are tied for 75th on the individual leaderboard of more than 200 golfers.
Jacksonville State's Melania Bajo Geijo leads the field after a round of 68 (-4). Only seven players carded under-par rounds Sunday.
The top 20 teams after Monday's second round will play for the championship Tuesday at Osprey Point, while the bottom 20 will compete in a consolation flight at Oak Point.
