No. 4 BYU Downs No. 13 Men?s Volleyball

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The No. 13 Ball State (9-7, 4-3 MIVA) men's volleyball team fell in a narrow 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 19-25) sweep to No. 4 Brigham Young University (13-3, 10-2 MPSF) Saturday evening, while the Cougars earned their seventh home sweep of the season.
Leading the Cardinals was senior Shane Witmer who each posted a team high of 11 kills with a .429 attack percentage. Witmer also marked six digs, one solo block and one block assist in the process of receiving an error-free 15 shots.
Following up Witmer offensively was senior Matt Sutherland and junior Marcin Niemczewski who both tallied eight kills. Sutherland stopped attacks with two block assists, while Niemczewski marked seven digs in the three set match.
Sophomore Brendan Surane stepped up at the serving line, earning his 21st ace of the season, as well as four kills and three block assists at the net.
Ball State suffered from eight service errors and 20 attack errors compared to BYU's 11 service errors paired with 13 attack errors. The Cardinals battled the Cougars, forcing six lead changes and 19 tie scores throughout the match.
The Cougars held the advantage in attack percentage (.327-.181), kills (45-37), blocks (14.5-5.5), and total attacks (98-94) despite falling in digs (36-31) and aces (3-2) to the Cardinals.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will continue on its road trip when they travel to UC-Irvine and UC-San Diego on March 6 and 7.
