February 14, 2015 | Softball
AUBURN, Ala. - - The Ball State softball team opened play in the Tiger Invitational hosted by No. 17 Auburn with losses to Georgia State, 10-4, and the host Tigers, 12-1 (5), Friday at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Cardinals (3-3) continue play in the three-day tournament Saturday, with games versus Mercer (9:45 a.m. CT) and Winthrop (12:15 p.m. CT).
In the opener versus Georgia State (2-1), the Cardinals pounded out 10 hits with junior shortstop Selena Reyna (Houston, Texas/South Houston) leading the way with a pair of doubles. Sophomore third baseman Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) also added her second career home run in the game.
In the nightcap versus 17th-ranked Auburn (9-0), sophomore third baseman Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Mt. Vernon/Louisville) provided the Cardinals' lone run with a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning.
GAME ONE RECAP: Georgia State 10, Ball State 4
Ball State opened the scoring in the top of the first versus the Panthers thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder Hanne Stuedemann (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan). Sophomore center fielder India Steward (Matteson, Ill./Rich South/Western Kentucky) opened the inning with an infield single, and after stealing second, advanced to third on an infield hit from senior right fielder Loren Cihlar (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Two batters later, Stuedemann drove in the first run of the game with a fly to left field.
Georgia State responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, with two runs coming on an infield single from Callie Alford.
The Cardinals were able to get one run back in the top of the second on Reyna's first of two doubles in the game. Junior first baseman Sammi Cowger (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) scored on the hit after opening the inning with a walk and advancing to third on a double from freshman third baseman Julia Bailey (Lafayette, Ind./Teurlings Catholic).
Unfortunately, GSU answered with two more runs in the bottom of the second to pull ahead 5-2.
Ball State cut that gap to two runs, 5-3, in the top of the fourth as Cowger led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Shelbie Scamihorn (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo). However, the Panthers tallied five runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals final run came in the top of the seventh thanks to Arnett's second home run of the year. Overall, the Cardinals
scored four runs on 10 hits with two errors versus Georgia State, while GSU tallied 10 runs on 12 hits with no errors.
GAME TWO RECAP: No. 17 Auburn 12, Ball State 1 in Five Innings
The host Tigers, who have outscored their nine opponents by a combined score of 106 to 20 this season, got off to another hot start versus Ball State thanks to a first inning grand slam from Jade Rhodes. Auburn extended its lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the second inning.
Ball State would break onto the scoreboard thanks to Houck's leadoff blast in the top of the third, only to see Auburn retire the final nine Cardinals' batters. The Tigers offense posted three more runs in the third and two in the fourth to give the game its final score of 12-1.
Overall the Cardinals scored one run on two hits with one error in the contest. Auburn tallied 12 runs on 10 hits with no errors. Ball State's only other hit in the contest came from Cowger who singled in the second.
