October 09, 2015 | Field Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State (1-12, 0-2 MAC) field hockey team continued Mid-American Conference action on the road when it took on No. 21 Miami (8-6, 3-0 MAC) Friday evening and fell 3-0 in the RedHawks sixth shutout of the season.
The Cardinals and the RedHawks remained scoreless through nearly the first half, until Miami's Geagy Pritchard scored her first of two goals in the 31st minute off a deflection in front of the net. Pritchard's second came in the 60th minute after senior Natalie Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) tallied her first defensive save of the season. Miami's Paula Portugal then finalized the score at 3-0 on an unassisted rebound shot just one minute later.
Back in net, junior goalkeeper Jordan Dues (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) suited up to make her 13th start of the season and recorded eight saves when faced with a demanding 25 attempted shots.
Miami's offense continued to hammer Dues throughout the 70 minutes, tallying 13 shots on goal from the 25 attempted. The Cardinals leading scorer Lexi Kavanaugh (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill) marked one of Ball State's three shots on goal, while senior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and junior Merinda Morley (University City, Mo./University City) each notched one on net as well.
Penalty corner opportunities were crucial for the conference matchup, in which the RedHawks benefitted from a dominating 16 attempts, while Ball State had two attempts from the top of the circle.
Up next, the Ball State field hockey team will return back to the Briner Sports Complex, in which they will welcome Bellarmine in non-conference play Sunday, Oct. 11. In order to support breast cancer awareness, the team will sport pink gear in the annual Pink Game that is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
