MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's and women's basketball programs spent time at the Muncie Youth Opportunity Center last week as part of their community outreach program before opening practice this past weekend.
"It was an awesome experience to go in and work with the young men,” Ball State women's basketball junior guard Jill Morrison said. "I feel like I may have learned more from them, in the few hours I was there then I could've ever taught them that day.”
The Cardinals ran through practice drills that were designed to help the young men with player development as well as teaching the participants team skills. The Ball State basketball teams opened the floor afterwards for a question and answer session encouraging the kids to stay positive and believe they too could be basketball players or anything else they wanted to be one day.
“Those kids have been through some hard times,” Ball State men's basketball senior center Nate Wells said. "Being able to go there and play basketball with them, share our joy for the game and see the look on their faces when they made layups or won relays, it was really rewarding. It was a good experience.”
Since the early 1990s, the YOC has provided a safe place for troubled children and families. Now, almost two decades later, hundreds of individuals have been helped by the over 380 YOC staff members who dedicate themselves each day to making a difference in a child's life.
