MUNCIE, Ind. -- Coming off its best showing of the fall, the Ball State men's golf team returns to action for the fourth time in the season's first four weeks.
The Cardinals travel to Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, to begin the Firestone Invitational on Monday. The club's North Course is home to the two-day, 54-hole event.
Ball State will use a similar lineup to the one that finished third last week at Wisconsin's Badger Invitational. Michael VanDeventer, James Blackwell, Johnny Watts and Michael Makris are in it, while Derek Kundenreich will join them. Timothy Wiseman will compete as an individual.
The 16-team field for the event features five Mid-American Conference teams -- Akron, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo -- along with Eastern Kentucky, Francis Marion, Georgetown, Illinois State, Maryland, Old Dominion, USC Aiken, Valparaiso, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Xavier.
USC Aiken is the defending champion, while Ball State finished 10 shots back in 12th place a year ago. VanDeventer was the Cardinals' top finisher in a tie for seventh.
VanDeventer and Blackwell tied for 12th at least week's Badger Invitational to lead the way for the Cardinals. It was the second straight top-20 result for both golfers.
The Firestone Invite gets underway Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
