CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Ball State women's tennis team competed at the UC Invitational this weekend. The Cardinals faced Xavier, Dayton and host Cincinnati.
"I didn't do a great job preparing us for the start of this tournament and it showed on day one,” Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "On day two we saw all sorts of situations as a team. I think we came out with great focus and executed a great game plan in doubles against a tough Cincinnati team at their home courts. In the first singles match we came out and showed some positive signs, specifically at the bottom of our lineup. Then in the final matches we closed out some difficult matches across the board. I think as a team we grew and took major steps forward. We look forward to getting some rest and getting back to work."
In doubles play, Ball State went 1-3 against Xavier but took two doubles matches from Cincinnati and Dayton. Audrey Berger alongside teammate Peyton Gollhofer earned a 6-4 win against Xavier. Gollhofer then paired up with Carmen Blanco for a 7-6 (8-6) defeat against Cincinnati. The Cardinals twosome of Isabelle Dohanics and Julia Sbircea also earned a victory over Cincinnati by a score of 7-5. Toni Ormond and Sbircea earned a doubles win over Dayton along with teammates Dohanics and Molly Fletchall.
Ball State would lose four of its six singles matches against Xavier and Cincinnati but rebounded well versus Dayton taking five of the six matches from the Flyers. Rosalinda Calderon took down the Musketeers Lauren Ghidotti in straights sets while Dohanics defeated Sophia Abelson 3-6, 6-4, 10-2. Dohanics improved to 2-0 on the weekend with a straight set win over Cincinnati's Natalie Abdalla. Burger would also take a singles victory away from the Bearcats.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues fall action when it competes at the ITA Regional Championship hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The regionals are set to begin Oct. 15.
