MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving team earned four individual event wins against Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. Ball State ultimately fell to Miami 186-111, despite racking up 19 top-three finishes in the final home event of the season.
Senior Carlena Magley turned in two individual event wins, paired with two second place finishes on the day. Magley clocked 1:55.38 in the 200 freestyle for first, along with a 53.06 time in the 100 freestyle, where she barely snagged first after being followed by Miami's Annie Marquiss at 53.07. Magley's other success came in the 50 free with a 24.36 time for a second place finish, and in the 400 free relay to round out the meet with another second place time at 3:33.90.
Sophomore Katie Horn rounded out the Ball State top finishes when she was first to touch the wall in the 200 fly at 2:08.20, and in the 100 fly with a time of 58.65. Horn was also in a narrow event with Miami's Kathleen Dodson trailing her at 58.73 for second.
All three Cardinal divers found new career high success on both the one and three meter boards this afternoon. Sophomore Brittany Penn reached the NCAA competition cut with a 266.40, surpassing the 265.00 minimum on the one meter, which is also a top-ten team best, while fellow sophomore Quinn Bixler marked a score of 268.58 on the three meter board. Freshman Taylor Fiew marked her new career-bests scores of 249.83 and 240.00 on the one and three meter boards, respectively. This will be the first time since the 2011-12 season that Ball State will bring two divers to the NCAA Zones in the same year, including Penn and junior diver Madie Zirzow.
Magley's second place 400 free relay partner Jordan VanWinkle clocked in three second place finishes on the day. Besides the relay, VanWinkle cinched second in two individual events, including the 500 free (5:12.39) and 1000 free (10:38.41).
Today's meet marked the final home event of the season and featured a special senior recognition program prior to the start of the event. The team honored seniors Magley, VanWinkle, Leighann Mattson, Elaine Pitsas, and Kayla Hussey for their dedication to the Ball State women's swimming and diving program.
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will round out MAC play on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Toledo for a 1 p.m. meet.
