September 08, 2014 | Women's Golf
NORMAL, Ill. -- The Ball State women's golf team finished the Redbird Invitational in fourth place Monday to wrap up its first tournament of the 2014-15 season.
It was a balanced effort with all six Ball State golfers finishing among the top half in the field of 93 golfers from 16 teams at Weibring Golf Club.
“I think we saw a lot of depth out there,” Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said. “Our lineup is very different than last year, but our younger golfers and newcomers definitely proved they can play. We can take a lot of positives from this tournament.”
The Cardinals posted a team score of 311 in the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 925. Tournament host Illinois State came from seven shots back entering the final day to win at 910, while overnight leader Northern Illinois tied with Butler for second at 922.
Illinois State's Brianna Cooper carded an even-par final round to claim medalist honors by six strokes at 2 over par on the tree-lined course.
Defending champion Jenna Hague led Ball State with a 4-over round of 76 Monday, while the Cardinals also counted a 77 from Kelsey Sear and a pair of 79s from Allison Lindley and Kayla Adamson.
Lindley and Adamson, playing in their first events for Ball State, were the team's top finishers. Lindley, a Kokomo, Ind., native and transfer from Iowa, tied for 17th with a three-round total of 230 (+14). Adamson, a freshman from Marion, Ind., was right behind her in a tie for 20th at 231 (+15).
Sear finished in a tie for 25th at 233 (+17), followed by Hague in a tie for 28th at 234 (+18). Morgan Nadaline rounded out the Ball State lineup in a tie for 43rd at 237 (+21), while Mary Ellen Romero, competing as an individual, tied for 33rd at 235 (+19).
Ball State will continue its fall schedule next week with Louisville's Cardinal Cup set for Sept. 15-16 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
The team will play its home event the following week, Sept. 22-23, at The Players Club in Yorktown.
