SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- The Ball State women's golf team closed out Louisville's Cardinal Cup in ninth place Tuesday. Freshman Kayla Adamson led Ball State in the final round with a 75.
The Cardinals posted a team score of 315 on Tuesday to end with a 54-hole total of 923 (+59) at the University of Louisville Golf Club. Louisville (+24) won the tournament, while Memphis (+30) took second and Kennesaw State (+33) was third.
Allison Lindley was Ball State's top individual finisher for the second straight event to begin the season. The sophomore from Kokomo, Ind., finished with a total of 226 (+10) to tie for 14th place.
Lindley, Jenna Hague and Kelsey Sear each shot 80 in the closing round to join Adamson and her 75 as the counting scores for Ball State.
The Cardinals started the day on the middle of the front side. After a challenging early part of the back nine, they closed out the tournament in strong fashion. Adamson was 1 under par on her final nine holes, while Sear was 1 over on her last nine. Lindley played her final seven at even par, and Hague played her last four in 1 under.
"Today we had a really tough stretch of holes, and it just seemed to be when the conditions were at their worst,” Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said. “The holes were playing long into the wind, and it was cold. But our finish was outstanding. It was encouraging to see that fight from them because they all salvaged their rounds even though our scores didn't match what we did yesterday."
Adamson was the second-best finisher for Ball State in a tie for 29th with a total of 230 (+14). Hague was next in a tie for 47th at 234 (+18), followed closely by Sear at 235 (+19).
Morgan Nadaline, competing this week as an individual, finished at 242, while Mary Ellen Romero rounded out the team's lineup at 250.
Ball State will return to action Monday with third first round of its home tournament, the Cardinal Classic. The two-day event will be played at The Players Club in Yorktown.
