September 23, 2014 | Women's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Kelsey Sear moved into a tie for fourth place Tuesday and the Ball State women's golf team finished the Cardinal Classic in sixth at The Players Club.
Karley Dobis posted the best final round for the Cardinals with a 2-over par 74. She finished in a tie for 11th, while round-one leader Meghan McDougall tied for eighth. Both players were competing separate from the Ball State lineup.
“We didn't finish the way we wanted, but I'm very pleased with Kelsey's performance,” Ball State head coach Katherine Mowat said. “To finish fourth in a field of nearly 100 golfers is fantastic. Again today, the depth of our team was apparent. Both rounds in this tournament were highlighted by our individuals shooting our lowest scores.”
Eastern Michigan defeated Western Michigan in a full-team playoff to claim the team championship after the squads tied with a 36-hole total of 598 (+22). Western Michigan's Chloe Lawrie was the individual medalist, finishing at 1 over par to defeat Eastern Michigan's Karyn Lee Ping by one stroke.
Ball State closed with a team score of 310 in the second round to finish in sixth with a final total of 621 (+45) over the two days. Sear and Kayla Adamson led the Ball State lineup Tuesday with 77s, while the Cardinals also counted a pair of 78s from Jenna Hague and Mary Ellen Romero.
Sear finished with a two-day total of 149 (+5), four strokes back of the medalist. Her tie for fourth place was the best result of her career outside of winning the Marian University Spring Classic last year.
Hague (T-27), Morgan Nadaline (T-32) and Mary Ellen Romero (T-36) also finished among the top half of the 99 golfers in the 16-team field.
Ball State is now three tournaments into its five-event fall schedule. The Cardinals will take next week off from competition before returning to action Oct. 6-7 at Cincinnati's Bearcat Invitational at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
