Five former student-athletes – Bryan Bullington (baseball), Kate (Endress) Doerksen (basketball), Mitch Hoban (football), Stephanie (Keller) Bloom (volleyball) and Zach Riley (track and field) -- will be inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame the weekend of Jan. 23-24.
The induction dinner will be Friday, Jan. 23, at the Ball State Alumni Center. Cost for the dinner is $40 per person and reservations can be made by calling the Cardinal Varsity Club office at 765.285.4190. A reception will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner and induction ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.
Bullington was originally selected for the Hall of Fame in 2011-12 but was unable to attend because of his commitments in professional baseball. He is continuing to play baseball in Japan but will attend this year's induction ceremony to be recognized for his achievements. A baseball letterwinner from 2000-02 for the Cardinals, he was the 2001 and 2002 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year. A three-time All-MAC selection, Bullington was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the first player from the MAC to ever be selected as the No. 1 choice in any major sports draft. Bullington is entering his fourth season playing professional baseball in Japan.
Endress earned four letters for the women's basketball team from 2001-05 and was the 2004-05 MAC Player of the Year. She was the nation's 2004-05 Academic All-American of the Year in women's basketball plus was the 2005 Indiana NCAA Woman of the Year. A two-time All-MAC First Team selection, Endress ended her career as the second woman and one of only four players, male or female, in Ball State history to reach the 1,800-point scoring plateau. Her 1,843 points placed her No. 2 on the school's all-time scoring chart and No. 11 in MAC history. In addition, Endress' 663 career rebounds made her one of only three players, male or female, in Ball State history to surpass the 1,800-point and 600-rebound milestones in a career. As a senior, she received honorable mention on the 2005 Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America Basketball Team.
Hoban was a football letterman for the Cardinals from 1973-76 and was a member of Ball State's first team to compete in the MAC in 1975. He helped the Cardinals to the school's first-ever conference title in 1976 with a 4-1 league mark. Hoban, an offensive lineman, was named to the 1976 Associated Press All-America Third Team. A two-time All-MAC selection, he helped head coach Dave McClain's Cardinals to a 9-2 overall record in 1975 and an 8-3 overall mark in 1976. He was a part of teams that compiled a 28-14-1 overall record in his career and an 8-3 ledger in the school's first two years of MAC play.
Keller competed for the Cardinals' women's volleyball team from 2001-04 and finished her career as the MAC's all-time leader in digs. A two-time MAC All-Tournament Team selection, Keller helped Ball State to the 2002 NCAA Tournament and the 2004 MAC West Division Championship. Keller has been a math teacher and the head girls' volleyball coach at Yorktown High School in Muncie, Ind., since 2008. She led her team to a 37-2 overall record and the 2011 Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A State Championship. Keller has guided the Tigers to four Delaware County titles, six conference championships, five sectional crowns and three state semifinal appearances. She has compiled a 219-32 head coaching record and was the IHSAA Class 3A Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011.
Riley competed in track and field at Ball State from 1998-2002 and was an NCAA All-American in the hammer throw in 2001 and 2002. Riley placed seventh at the 2002 NCAA Championships with a throw of 212'-2”, and his throw of 215'-11” in a meet at Indiana that season set a Ball State outdoor school record. He became only the second track and field student-athlete in Ball State history to earn All-America First Team honors. In addition, Riley was a 2002 Academic All-American. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Ball State plus a doctorate from Colorado. An assistant professor at IUPUI, Riley was a three-time MAC Champion in the hammer throw and qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials after graduation.
