MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving team earned 13-of-21 event wins against Grand Valley State University in the 11th annual Douglas A. Coers Invitational, ultimately downing the Lakers 795.5-725.5. Senior Jordan VanWinkle recorded five first place event wins in addition to a second and third place finish throughout the two day event.
Divers Brittany Penn, Quinn Bixler and Taylor Fiew all recorded season and college career bests in the 1-meter dive Friday night, followed by Penn and Fiew notching the same in the 3-meter on Saturday afternoon. Junior diver Madie Zirzow earned an individual event win in the 1-meter with a score of 252.53, while placing second with a score of 257.18. All four are ranked in the Mid-American Conference top 16 in 3-meter dive going into the mid-season invitational.
“Grand Valley is a well coached team that was able to give us some great competition for the weekend. Our depth is what won the meet for us and we were able to perform well under pressure,” Ball State women's swimming and diving head coach Kristy Castillo said. “I was pleased with the number of season best performances both off the blocks and off the boards. This meet has set us up well for our mid-season invitational.”
The Cardinals clenched the 400 freestyle relay to round out the invitational by the combination of seniors VanWinkle, Elaine Pitsas, Carlena Magley and sophomore Jessica Extine for a finished 3:35.09. VanWinkle's other first place finishes included the 200 free (1:55.11), 400 medley relay (3:56.90), 500 free (5:09.00), and the 200 free relay (1:38.03).
