MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men's golfer McCormick Clouser has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 6.
Clouser, a mathematical economics major with a 3.857 GPA, won his first collegiate tournament last week at the Fighting Irish Golf Classic. The senior from Bluffton, Ind., led Ball State to a second-place team finish and was named the MAC Co-Golfer of the Week for his performance.
Clouser recorded a career-best 54-hole total of 4-under par 209 (66-72-71) in the tournament, which was split between Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course and Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgman, Mich. He held or shared the lead after each of the three rounds.
His opening 66 (-5) marked the best round of his collegiate career and the best by a Ball State men's golfer away from home in the past five years. Clouser became the first Cardinal to win a full-team tournament since Tyler Merkel at the Golf Pride Pinehurst Intercollegiate in March 2013.
Ball State wrapped up a sixth place finish Tuesday at the Firestone Invitational with Clouser tying for 22nd. The Cardinals are back in action next week, hosting the Sagamore Fall Preview on Monday and Tuesday at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville.
