MAINEVILLE, Ohio -- Ball State women's golfers Jenna Hague and Allison Lindley positioned themselves in the top 10 Monday on a challenging opening day at Cincinnati's Bearcat Classic.
The teams were scheduled to play 36 holes Monday, but rain throughout the morning and a 90-minute lightning delay limited the action to just one round. The 54-hole event has been cut to 36 holes with the final round to be played Tuesday at TPC River's Bend.
Ball State is 11th in the team race after opening with a score of 317 (+29). The Cardinals are 10 shots back of tournament leader and host Cincinnati (+19). Morehead State (+20) is second and Eastern Kentucky (+21) is third on a tight leaderboard.
Hague opened with a 2-over par round of 74 to put herself in a tie for fourth place after the first round. She was steady all day long with 14 pars. Lindley is one shot behind her in a tie for seventh after a 75 that included an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. It was the lone eagle of the day among the entire field.
The format for this week's tournament features six players competing for each team with the top four scores in each round counting. Ball State also counted an 83 from Karley Dobis and an 85 from Mary Ellen Romero on day one.
Wofford's Lauren Dunbar holds the individual lead after a 71. She managed the only sub-par round of the day in cold, wet and windy conditions on a long, demanding course.
The Cardinals will look to climb up the leaderboard in Tuesday's second and final round. Live scoring for the tournament is available at birdiefire.com.
