Final Round Washed Out, Men?s Golf 11th at Sagamore
October 14, 2014 | Men's Golf
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Tuesday's final round at the Sagamore Fall Invitational was washed out early in the day. Heavy rains and unplayable conditions forced the cancelation of the round with some of the leaders still yet to tee off.
The final results reverted back to the conclusion of Monday's second round. No. 1-ranked Illinois won the shortened, 36-hole event with a 6-under par total of 570. No. 8 Auburn was second at 578 (+2), while Northern Illinois edged UAB by one shot for third place at 590 (+14).
Thomas Detry of Illinois claimed individual medalist honors at 5 under par, while his teammate Brian Campbell and Auburn players Matt Gilchrist and Daniel Stringfellow tied for second at 2 under.
The tournament was played at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Sagamore Club, where Ball State will host next spring's NCAA Regional in conjunction with the Hamilton County Sports Authority. Five of the 14 teams in the field were ranked among the top 50 in the country.
Ball State finished 11th at 612 (+36) as a team. The Cardinals were in the final groups off the back nine for Tuesday's split tee start and did not yet have all five players on the course when play was stopped.
McCormick Clouser was the top Ball State player on the final leaderboard in a tie for 32nd at 7 over 151 (76-75), while Michael VanDeventer tied for 38th at 152 (79-73). Johnny Watts at 155 (79-76), Michael Makris at 156 (78-78) and Zach Yinger at 157 (77-80) rounded out the lineup.
Two Ball State players also competed this week as individuals: James Blackwell at 154 (80-74) and Derek Kundenreich at 158 (79-79).
The course was already wet from rain in the previous weeks, and the teams played through steady rain early in Monday's opening round. When the heavy rains came Tuesday morning, portions of the course became unplayable and forced play to be stopped.
Ball State now has one team event remaining in the fall portion of its schedule, the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate slated for Oct. 27-28 in Estero, Fla. The Cardinals will send individuals to compete next Monday and Tuesday at the Dayton Men's Golf Fall Invitational.
