October 14, 2014 | Men's Golf
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team sits in 11th place through two rounds at the Sagamore Fall Preview after an opening day that started in the rain and ended in near darkness.
The tournament began with 36 holes Monday at The Sagamore Club, site of the NCAA Regional that Ball State will host next spring with the Hamilton County Sports Authority.
No. 1-ranked Illinois posted a pair of under-par rounds to claim the top spot on the team leaderboard with a total of 6-under 570 (284-286). No. 8 Auburn led after the opening round but fell eight strokes off the pace into second place in the afternoon. Northern Illinois is third, 12 shots behind Auburn.
Ball State posted a total of 36-over par 612 (310-302). The Cardinals moved up two spots after a challenging first round and will enter Tuesday's final round in 11th place. The final round is set to begin with a split tee start Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Thomas Detry of Illinois tops the individual leaderboard at 5 under par, while teammate Brian Campbell and Auburn players Matt Gilchrist and Daniel Stringfellow are tied for second at 2 under. Gilchrist had the round of the day with a 67 on the opening 18 holes.
McCormick Clouser is the top Ball State player in a tie for 32nd at 7 over 151 (76-75), while Michael VanDeventer is tied for 38th at 152 (79-73). Johnny Watts at 155 (79-76), Michael Makris at 156 (78-78) and Zach Yinger at 157 (77-80) round out the lineup.
Two Ball State players are also competing as individuals: James Blackwell at 154 (80-74) and Derek Kundenreich at 158 (79-79).
Teams played the first hour Monday in rainy conditions before skies cleared and the sun came out for much of the day. By the end of the day, it was a race to get the round completed. But the teams were able to beat the darkness by just a few minutes to finish 36 holes.
