Muncie, Ind. – The Ball State (5-7) field hockey team took down Michigan State (7-6) in a 2-1 overtime final Sunday afternoon to sweep the weekend at the Briner Sports Complex.
Sophomore Lexi Kavanaugh (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill) rallied in overtime to score in just the third minute with her fourth career game winning goal with an assist from junior Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Junior Cameron Daniels (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) opened the scoring in the 10th minute off a penalty corner with the help of senior Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes/Beach Premire/Icoyo).
“It was a team effort on both attack and defense which is why we were successful,” Ball State field hockey head coach Beth Maddox said. “Now that we're in the groove, the girls are believing in their abilities and executing and there's no one we can't hang with.”
Junior goaltender Shelby Henley (Novi, Mich./Novi) tallied three saves and registered a 0.750 save percentage. The Cardinals recorded five shots on goal to the Spartans four. Abby Barker was the lone Spartan able to get past Henley at the 25 minute mark in the first half.
“Yesterday was the most important game of the weekend, so today is a bonus,” Maddox went on. “I think that the girls have worked hard and they know we're working for the Mid-American Conference tournament so hopefully today just reinforces that when we do the right things, good things will happen.”
The Ball State field hockey team will be back in action Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Farmville, Va. to take on Longwood.
