Field Hockey Earns Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Indiana
September 30, 2012 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (3-8, 0-2 MAC) earned a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers (6-3, 0-1 Big Ten). Freshman Allie White (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) netted the winning goal for the Cardinals with just 18 seconds left in the game.
"We played together and I knew when we do that the results would happen," said head coach Beth Maddox. "It was the first time all season that we played all 70 minutes together."
The Hoosiers got on the board in the 13th minute off a Mariella Grote goal. Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) scored the equalizer for the Cardinals at the 34:02 mark off a penalty corner, her fourth goal of the season. Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) were credited with the assists.
Ball State held the slight shot advantage at the end of the first half, 8-7, as well as the advantage in penalty corners, 5-3, and saves, 3-2.
Indiana's Sydney Supica drilled a shot from the top of the shooting circle in the 42nd minute to give the Hoosiers the 2-1 advantage. The Cardinal's second goal came off of a penalty corner, scored by Marisa Weachter (Manheim, Pa./Manheim) and assisted by Bethany Han (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). The goal was Weachter's first goal of the 2012 campaign.
As time was waning in the game, White was able to convert on a deflection to give the Cardinals the win at the 69:42 mark.
"Jenna [Rosenberry] hit a shot in the box and it popped up and I just smacked it and it went in," said White. "It feels awesome to get this win because we played united and we knew we were a team that was capable of playing like we did today. We created a lot of options for each other which was what helped."
The Cardinals held the overall advantage in penalty corners, 11-6, and saves, 7-4, while both squads were tied with 16 shots apiece.
Freshman Maddie Elliott (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) was credited with the win, playing all 70 minutes for the first time in her career.
"Maddie played great," said Maddox. "We made a decision at halftime to keep her in and give her the opportunity to play for a full 70 minutes and she did a fantastic job."
