Soccer?s Chew Named MAC Defensive Player of the Week
August 28, 2012 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State women's soccer player Skylar Chew has been recognized for the second day in a row for her performance over the weekend. The Mid-American Conference announced her selection Tuesday as the league's defensive player of the week.
Chew, who on Monday was chosen as the MAC's top performer for the week by College Sports Madness, scored one goal and assisted on another in the Cardinals' two contests at the Ball State Tournament. She helped BSU defeat Northern Kentucky and Xavier, both by 2-1 scores, to claim a share of the tournament title.
A senior defender from Mason, Ohio, Chew was part of a Ball State back line that surrendered just two goals all weekend. She helped the Cardinals limit their opponents to a combined 10 shots on goal while playing all 197:41 in the field over the two games.
Her play on the offensive end also proved to be vital. Chew gave the Cardinals the lead in the second half of Friday's victory over Northern Kentucky, scoring with a header off a corner kick. Sunday against Xavier, she assisted teammate Aubrey Hauenstein on the game-tying goal in the 79th minute, and Ball State went on to win in two overtimes.
The player of the week honor from the MAC office is the first of Chew's career. She was an Academic All-MAC selection in 2011 and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District performer in 2010.
Chew and her teammates return to the field Friday when Ball State (2-1-0) welcomes IUPUI to Briner Sports Complex for a 4 p.m. contest. The Cardinals will then host IPFW on Sunday at 1 p.m.
