Three Ball State Golfers Named Academic All-MAC

Ball State golf student-athletes Katie Windlan, Tyler Merkel and Alex Stinson have each been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams, which are selected by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
Windlan, one of 10 members selected to the women's team, managed a 3.737 grade-point average on Ball State's 4.0 scale as a criminal justice major and graduated in May. She averaged 80.68 as a senior and tallied two top-20 finishes, including one top-10 placing. Windlan tied for 25th at the MAC Championships as a senior and had a season best tie for fourth at the Western Tri Match. A recipient of Ball State's 2011-12 Golf Coach's Award, Windlan was also named to the 2011 Academic All-MAC squad.
Merkel, a sophomore with a 3.916 GPA as a business administration major, led Ball State with a 73.47 average. He was named to the All-MAC First Team after earning second-team honors a year ago. Merkel managed four top-10 finishes this season, including a tie for first at the Northern Intercollegiate. A three-time MAC Player of the Week, he tied for 28th at the MAC Championships.
Stinson, who owns a 3.698 GPA as a junior biology major, recorded three top-20 finishes this season. He tied for 14th at the Cobra-Puma Invitational, tied for 16th at the Firestone Invitational and tied for 17th at the Northern Intercollegiate. Stinson tallied a career low 70 in the final round of the Firestone Invitational en route to a career low 54-hole total of 215. This marked the second straight season Stinson has been named to the Academic All-MAC Team.
Merkel and Stinson were two of only seven men's golfers named to the Academic All-MAC squad.
