Baseball Drops Series Finale To Kent State
April 01, 2012 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State baseball team dropped the series finale Sunday afternoon to perennial Mid-American Conference power Kent State 18-2 at Ball Diamond. The Cardinals return to play Tuesday afternoon as they wrap up their five-game home stand hosting Indiana Tech.
Junior left-hander Miles Moeller (Phoenix, Ariz./Glendale CC) was wild in the first inning issuing three walks and a lead off hit Evan Campbell allowing Kent State to take an early 1-0 lead. Moeller limited the damage to just one run though as he struck out Troy Summers with the bases loaded to keep it a one-run game.
Kent State (14-12, 6-0 MAC) chased Moeller from the game in the second inning as it took advantage of a BSU error to score three runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Golden Flashes posted three hits in the inning after the error, including a run-scoring double by George Roberts.
Ball State (4-19, 1-5 MAC) threatened in the bottom of the second inning as Cody Campbell (Muncie, Ind./Cowan), Sean Godfrey (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) and Kirby Campbell (Muncie, Ind./Cowan) posted singles to load the bases with one out. Kent State starter Tyler Skulina worked his way out of the jam though as he got a strike out and an infield pop fly to strand the bases loaded.
The Golden Flashes broke the game open in the top of the third inning against the Cardinals' bullpen as they scored six runs to take a 10-0 lead. Campbell had the big hit for Kent State with a three-run home run over the right field wall while Tommy Monnot posted a two-run double.
The Cardinals broke through against Skulina in the third inning as Mitch Widau (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) was hit by a pitch. After a ground ball, Cody Campbell ripped a run-scoring single off the third base bag and into left field to score Widau. The Cardinals made it a 10-2 game as Billy Wellman (Portland, Ind./Jay County) came off the bench and ripped a RBI single into the right center field gap.
Kent State added to its lead with three runs in the fourth and the fifth inning to open to a 16-2 lead before the Cardinals' bullpen threw up three zeros. Left-hander Matt Johnsen (Barrington, Ill./Fremd) turned in a solid outing for the Cardinals working 2.2 shutout innings and striking out a career-high four batters.
Moeller (1-2) was charged with the loss as he lasted 1.1 innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on three hits while walking three. Skulina (3-2) picked up the victory for Kent State as he worked into the seventh inning allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six batters.
Ball State steps out of MAC play Tuesday afternoon as it hosts Indiana Tech. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Ball Diamond.
