March 27, 2012 | Men's Golf
Eric Steger, a 2011 graduate of Ball State and a four-year letterwinner for the men's golf team, won his first pro event on the West Florida Golf Tour at the Founders Club Series in Sarasota, Fla.
Steger posted a five under par 67 to tie with two other individuals, but won the tournament's third playoff hole with a birdie to win the title. Steger advanced to the playoff against two of the Tour's best and most consistent players -- Scott Berliner and Brian Ward -- who rank seventh and 12th, respectively, on the Tour's career money list.
With the victory, Steger moved to 20th on the West Florida Golf Tour Money List. The Tour's next stop is the Lakewood Ranch Series at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club in Sarasota, Fla., Thursday.
As a senior at Ball State, Steger was a 2011 PING Division I All-Midwest Region Selection after advancing to the NCAA Regional. He was a 2011 All-Mid-American Conference First Team and MAC All-Tournament choice. Steger led Ball State in 2010-11 with a 72.74 average and tallied five rounds in the 60's while accumulating five top-10 finishes.
