
Softball Earns 5-1 Victory Over UNLV

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Ball State softball team (17-7) took down UNLV (14-14) by a score of 5-1 in its first game at the Mustang Classic Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals scored five runs off of seven hits and committed no errors for the game. Audrey Workman earned the victory for the Cardinals on the mound after seven innings of work she gave up one run off of three hits improving to 9-5 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Ball State managed to score first at the top of the second after a sacrifice fly from catcher Sadie Robertson that brought home third baseman Audrey Bickel who had reached base due to a walk. Center fielder Amanda Carpenter also highlighted the Cardinals at bat with a double to left center allowing Bickel to advance to third.
The Cardinals started the third inning with the top of the batting order, left fielder Jennifer Gilbert hit a single up the middle to get Ball State off on a quick start. Right fielder Hanne Stuedman managed a double down the left field line which scored Gilbert to give the Cardinals the 2-1 advantage over the Rebels. With two on base and one out, Bickel hit a three-run homer over the right centerfield fence given Ball State the 5-1 advantage over UNLV. The homerun was the fourth of the season and sixth of her career.
Neither team scored the remainder of the four innings, giving the Cardinals the victory. Ball State will now face host Cal Poly in the second game at Bob Janssen Field. First pitch slated for 8:30 (PT).Team Stats
