March 02, 2012 | Softball
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Ball State softball team rebound from a morning loss with an 8-0 (5 inning) victory over Temple in its second game of the Citrus Classic Friday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.
Sophomore Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) drove in three of the runs, with an RBI double in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. She finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles and a run scored.
Freshman designated play Hanne Stuedemann (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) got the Ball State (6-5) offense rolling in the top of the fourth, with her first career home run. She also drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the Cardinals final run of the fourth frame.
On the mound, senior Kim Mazzapica (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) improved to 4-0 on the season by limiting Temple (3-4), which handed Purdue its first loss of the season earlier in the day, two just two hits over five innings. She also struck out a pair of batters.
Freshman second baseman Taylor Cox (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica) led off the third inning with a single, and after stealing second, would come around to score on a RBI double down the right field line by Gilbert. Freshman right fielder Loren Cihlar (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) would reach base on an error, and the Cardinals would eventually get the runners to second and third with two outs, but a lineout ended the inning.
Stuedemann started a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth with her first career home run, a solo shot down the right field line with one out. Freshman shortstop Jessica Craft (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) followed with an infield single, while Cox drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Gilbert would follow with her second RBI hit of the game, driving the runners home with a double to center field.
An infield single from Cihlar put two runners on for senior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) who singled up the middle to drive home Gilbert. After a lineout, sophomore third baseman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) drew a walk to load the bases.
A fielding error by the shortstop allowed junior center fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) to reach base and helped Cihlar cross the plate. Stuedemann would follow with a bases-loaded walk to bring home Montalto for BSU's final run of the fourth inning and move the score to 7-0.
The Cardinals scored the game's final run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to a leadoff walk from Cox. After an Owls' pitching change, Gilbert singled down the right field line to put runners at the corners. Cihlar followed with a RBI groundout to the pitcher to give Ball State the eight-run victory.
The Ball State softball team continues play in the Citrus Classic Saturday with games versus St. John's (4:45 p.m.) and Lipscomb (7 p.m.).
