Tyler Merkel Named MAC Men's Golfer of the Week

Tyler Merkel, a sophomore member of the Ball State men's golf team, has been selected the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Mid-American Match Play event Feb. 13 and 14.
Merkel went 3-0 in his three match play matches to lead Ball State to the Mid-American Match Play Championship. The event included eight of the nine Mid-American Conference schools and was played at Lake Jovita South Golf Course in Dade City, Fla.
The Cardinals, seeded No. 1 at the event, defeated No. 8 seed Ohio, fourth-seeded Northern Illinois and the No. 3 seeded Eastern Michigan.
Merkel won his final match over EMU 3 and 2 over the Eagles' Brian ChurchillSmith. He defeated Ohio's Paul Grauer 6 and 5 in the opening round, and then defeated Bryce Emory of Northern Illinois 1 Up in the semifinals.
Ball State will return to action March 10-11 at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at Pinehurst #6 in Pinehurst, N.C.
