MUNCIE, Ind. -- After recording back-to-back shutouts over the weekend, Ball State senior goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler was selected Monday as the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer.
Buehler helped Ball State to a 1-0 victory Friday over Eastern Michigan and a scoreless draw Sunday with Western Michigan to keep the Cardinals in the thick of the MAC West race.
Ball State became the first team in conference play and just the second all season to shut out Eastern Michigan, which was previously unbeaten and untied in MAC play. Buehler and the Cardinals defenders stifled an Eagles attack that ranked third in the league in goals scored. In the closing minutes, she made a pair of saves and came out of the goal to play a threatening cross to secure the win.
Sunday against Western Michigan, Buehler played all 110 minutes of a double-overtime contest in the net. She made five saves in the contest, including four after halftime, while also directing the actions of the Ball State back line and collecting several dangerous crosses by the Broncos to secure the draw.
A former transfer, Buehler now owns three shutouts this season, 10 in her three years as a Cardinal and 15 in her collegiate career.
She is the third Ball State player this season to be named the league's defensive player of the week, joining Skylar Chew (Aug. 28) and Pavla Benyrova (Sept. 24).
The Cardinals, currently third in the MAC West standings, own an overall record of 6-4-4 and a league mark of 3-1-2. They continue conference play on the road this weekend, visiting Toledo Friday at 4 p.m. and Northern Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. CT in DeKalb, Ill.).
