October 21, 2012 | Men's Golf
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team will close the fall portion of its schedule Monday and Tuesday at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State.
The 54-hole event will be played at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga., and will feature 12 full teams -- Ball State, Kennesaw State, Florida Gulf Coast, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Louisiana Tech, Marquette, Middle Tennessee, Samford, Northern Illinois, South Alabama and Troy -- plus individual golfers from Chattanooga.
Ball State leads a group of eight of those teams ranked in the top 150 nationally. The Cardinals are rated No. 34 by Golfweek and No. 40 by Golfstat.
The Ball State lineup for the tournament will feature junior Tyler Merkel plus seniors Joe Gasser, Alex Stinson, Tony Lazzara and Brodie Williams. Sophomore Zach Yinger will also be competing as an individual.
Gasser is coming off two consecutive top-3 finishes after tying for third place two weeks ago at the Firestone Invitational and tying for second last week at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, an individual event. The Cardinals placed five golfers in the top 10 at their home tournament.
Ball State's most recent event with team scoring was the Firestone Invitational, which the Cardinals won by 13 strokes at Firestone Country Club. Merkel finished second at that tournament.
The Pinetree Intercollegiate gets underway Monday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. The first day will feature 36 holes, while the final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.
