
Women's Basketball Defeats Northern Illinois, 50-43

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (7-9, 2-1 MAC) tallied a 50-43 victory over visiting Northern Illinois (6-9, 0-3 MAC) Wednesday evening in Worthen Arena.
Ball State led most of the second half before Northern Illinois put together a late 8-0 run to take its first lead of the ball game 41-39 with 4:33 remaining.
The Cardinals answered quickly by hitting their free throws down the stretch along with a three-point play that senior forward Suzanne Grossnickle executed after a layup to give Ball State the four-point (47-43) edge with under minute left.
Ball State put four players in double figures led by Jazmin Hitchens with 11 points. Grossnickle, Jordan Huber and Brandy Woody added 10 points apiece. Hitchens and Brittany Carter led the Cardinals with six rebounds apiece.
A three-pointer from Hitchens got the Cardinals off to an early 3-0 lead over the Huskies in the opening minutes of the first half.
The Huskies knotted the game at 8-8 at the 15:38 mark, but a layup from junior guard Mercedes Miller gave the Cardinals back the lead allowing Ball State to control the remainder of the half.
Ball State headed into intermission up 30-18 over Northern Illinois. Huber led all scorers at the half with 10-points after knocking down two three pointers and two layups.
Ball State limited Northern Illinois to 31 percent shooting from the field, including 0-of-4 from three point range. In addition, the Cardinals forced the Huskies into 25 turnovers on the night.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues league action at Central Michigan Saturday. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
