BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Ball State soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals dropped a 3-1 decision to host Western Kentucky in the WKU Tournament championship game.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals placed three players on the All-Tournament team, all of them in the junior class. Defenders Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) along with midfielder Maggie Brown (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) earned all-tournament accolades.
Western Kentucky (2-0) came out of the gate quickly as it scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of play on its way to a 3-0 first half lead. Leslie Chinn, Mallory Outerbridge and Courtney Rymer each found the back of the net for the Hilltoppers as WKU out-shot the Cardinals 8-5 in the opening half.
Ball State regrouped in the second half and controlled play with a 6-1 edge in shots while sophomore Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) worked the final 47:49 of shutout soccer in goal.
The Cardinals broke the Western Kentucky shutout attempt in the 87th minute of play as Brown scored her team-leading second of the season. Junior forward Shaniece Thorpe was able to find Brown in the box where she buried the pass into the back of the net from eight-yards out.
Ball State returns to action Friday afternoon in its home opener as it hosts Big Ten power Illinois. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and will be the first regular season contest ever held at the Briner Sports Complex, just north of Scheumann Stadium.
