July 08, 2011 | Men's Golf
Brian Maurer, a member of the Ball State men's golf team from 2005-09, qualified for the John Deere Classic, a PGA Tour event, and managed a 72-71=143.
Maurer's one over par in the first two rounds of the tourney missed the cut in his first professional event.
In the second round, Maurer managed three birdies and three bogies en route to a 71.
In the first round, Maurer's eagle on the par-5 17th and a pair of bogies on the back side gave him a -1 after nine holes. He opened the second nine with a bogey and tallied another pair of bogies on five and six before managing a birdie on his final hole, the par-4 No. 9.
Maurer made consecutive pars in a sudden-death playoff during Monday's John Deere Classic Open Qualifier at Pinnacle Country Club, and with that became one of the final four entrants into the JDC field a year after missing out by a single stroke.
Maurer, who has spent this season on the Hooters Tour and ranks 149th, tied two others in the Qualifier with a 5-under par 66.
Maurer was an All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection as a senior plus was named Ball State's Travis J. Smith Most Valuable Player after leading the team with a 73.58 average. He posted eight top-20 finishes and four top-10 showings as a senior and tied for 10th at the MAC Championships. As a junior, Maurer led the Cardinals with a 74.13 average.
