Golf Alum Wins Tourney; Three With Ties in Top Five

Brian Maurer, a former men's golfer at Ball State, won the Indiana Open Championship at Elcona Country Club in Elkhart, Ind., and three others with Ball State ties rounded out the top five.
Maurer, who played in the PGA's John Deere Classic earlier this season, won the event with a 69-71-70-75=285. He tied Muncie native Chase Wright, but claimed the title in a playoff.
Tyler Merkel, a sophomore on the 2011-12 Ball State team, finished third with a 69-69-76-72=286.
A pair of Ball State alums -- C.D. Hockersmith and Jamie Broce -- tied for fourth with identical scores of 287. Hockersmith managed a 69-71-73-74, while Broce tallied a 70-68-77-72.
Eric Steger, a 2010 graduate of Ball State, tied for 24th with a 73-74-79-72=298, while Ball State junior Alex Stinson tied for 41st with a 76-76-71-78=301.
