WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State baseball team closed out the non-conference portion of the 2011 schedule Wednesday afternoon with an 14-9 loss to Big Ten foe Purdue at Lambert Field. The Boilermakers scored 12 runs in the first three innings before Ball State made a late charge scoring five unanswered at one point and pounding out a season-high 18 hits in the loss.
Freshman T.J. Weir (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) drove in a career-high three runs as he hit his first career home run in the third inning while also posting a double in the sixth inning. Senior shortstop T.J. Baumet (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) posted a career-high four hits in the loss and reached base five times.
Purdue (31-16) jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first inning against freshman left-hander Nestor Bautista (New York, N.Y./George Washington). The Boilermakers opened the inning with three straight singles and four singles in the first five batters to open to a 3-0 lead to end Bautista's afternoon. Purdue added a fourth run in the inning as it sent 10 batters to the plate and posted five hits.
The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the second inning against Purdue right-hander Robert Ramer. Sophomore Dominic Catanzarite (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) started things off as he ripped a one-out double into left center field. After the second out of the inning, sophomore Wes Winkle (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) singled up the middle to score Catanzarite to make it a 4-1 contest.
The Boilermakers posted four more runs in the second inning to open up an 8-1. Purdue posted six straight hits in the inning, including a home run and five singles while also notching a run-scoring walk.
Ball State (12-32) came back in the top of the third inning against Purdue left-hander Pat Gannon. Junior Tim Issler (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) led off the inning with his second single and sophomore Stephen Claypool (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) drew a walk to put two aboard. Weir crushed his first career home run, a three-run shot high over the left field wall to narrow the deficit to 8-4.
After Purdue added four more runs in the third inning, the Cardinals added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Winkle reached base on a fielder's choice with one out and moved into scoring position as Baumet singled into center field. Sophomore Kirby Campbell (Muncie, Ind./Cowan) picked up an RBI single as he singled through the left side to plate Winkle for a 12-5 deficit.
The Cardinals added their sixth run in the seventh inning to pull within six runs at 12-6. Weir came inches from his second career home run as he hit a double off the left field wall with two outs. He came home to score as Catanzarite reached base on a Purdue fielding error by the third baseman.
Ball State continued to chip away at the deficit once again in the top of the eighth inning as it plated three more runs to narrow the gap to 12-9. Baumet started things with his fourth hit of the game as he singled off the first base bag. After Campbell drew a walk, Issler singled into right center field to load the bases. Claypool and freshman Sean Godfrey (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) added run-scoring singles before Catanzarite drew a bases loaded walk to cap in the inning's scoring. Nick Wittgren came on and ended the threat as he stranded the bases loaded.
Bautista (0-5) picked up the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits in just a third of an inning. The Cardinals used eight pitchers on the afternoon and allowed 14 Purdue runs on 15 hits in the loss. Ramer improves to 5-0 on the season as he worked the first 2.0 innings and allowed one run as Purdue was scheduled to use multiple pitchers.
Ball State will hit the road for the final time in the 2011 regular season this weekend as it travels to DeKalb, Ill., for a three-game series against the Northern Illinois Huskies. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. (ET) Friday afternoon.
