Softball Remains Undefeated in MAC Play

AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State University softball team improved to 22-13 on the season and remained undefeated 3-0 in Mid-American Conference action after posting a 7-1 win at Akron Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Akron falls to 13-11 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
After two scoreless innings, senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) started the top of the third off with a double to center field. With one out, senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) was patient at the plate to reach first base.
Sophomore left fielder Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) then singled, bringing home Collins and Barkley to go up 2-0 over Akron. Freshman Jennifer Gilbert McKinney, Texas/McKinney) would then hit a two-run homer to end the inning, making it a 4-0 ball game. The homerun marked Gilbert's sixth of the season.
Ball State added runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to go up 7-0 over the Zips. Junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) scored in the fourth off an error. In the fifth, a double from Gilbert to right center allowed Carpenter to cross the plate, she had reached base due to a fielders' choice. Freshman first baseman Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) singled to center in the sixth for an RBI.
Junior pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) threw a shutout up until the bottom of the seventh where Akron would score only one run.
Workman improved to 7-5 on the season with the win for the Cardinals. After 7.0 innings of work, she gave up one run off of two hits, while striking out four batters.
The Ball State softball team will play Akron Sunday at Lee R. Jackson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
