EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Ball State soccer team suffered its second straight loss Friday night as the Cardinals dropped a 2-0 decision at SIU-Edwardsville despite out-shooting the Cougars by a 15-14 margin. The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-2-0 on the season while SIUE improves to 3-0-0 on the year.
SIUE opened the scoring in the 24th minute of action as Hope Jones ripped a shot form 15-yards out that freshman goalkeeper Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) made an initial save on. The rebound bounced out in front to Sarah Doggendorf who found Kaci Harkey for the tap in and the early 1-0 SIUE goal.
Ball State put pressure on the Cougars as sophomore forward Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) was aggressive with a game-high five shots. SIU-Edwardsville goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck posted eight saves in the victory as she recorded her third straight shutout to open the year. The Cougars capped the scoring in the 60th minute of action as Doggendorf scored on a scramble inside the six-yard box for the 2-0 lead.
Schramm played all 90 minutes for the first time in her Ball State career and posted a career-high eight saves. The loss evens the BSU-SIUE all-time series at one game apiece after the Cardinals defeated the Cougars 3-2 last year in Muncie.
Ball State returns to action Sunday afternoon as it heads to Southeast Missouri. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (CT) for the non-conference contest.
