MUNCIE, Ind. - Four years ago Ross Cosat and Travis Smith began their Ball State golfing careers as freshmen in the Cardinals' program.
The duo joined an already experienced BSU roster and their sights were set on leading the Cardinals back to a Mid-American Conference Championship and into the NCAAs.
However, Cosat was forced to experience the final three and half years on campus -- and on the course -- without Smith, whose life was tragically taken too soon in automobile accident in 2007.
"Coming in and having to go through what he went through and the loss of Travis, you don't know how to coach those type of things," says BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "For Ross to persevere and go through that entire process, and now here it is his senior year and he is the only senior on our team. Those experiences have made him a stronger person."
While Smith was never able to play his final round as Cardinal in what would have been his senior season, his memory will live on forever in the BSU men's golf program.
"Travis is still very much part of our program," Fleck adds. "I know it will change a little bit when Ross graduates, but we talk a lot about the Ball State golf family and being connected for life. Travis is going to be as much a part of our program from here on out as any of the guys who are playing for us, have played for us or will play for us."
Cosat finishes his collegiate career this spring with over 100 competitive rounds at Ball State, including a career-low round of 65. He was named the team's Most Improved Player in 2008.
