Meghan Perry, a senior at Evansville North High School in Indiana, and Sarah Westaway, a senior at St. Joseph's Catholic High School in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, have signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete on the women's golf team, according to Cardinals head women's golf coach Katherine Mowat.
Ball State placed second at the nine team 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships, which marked the best finish in school history. The Cardinals also won the Toledo MAC Tournament Preview in October and finished in the top-10 in 11 out of 12 tournaments this season. Ball State has won nine collegiate tournaments in Coach Mowat's six seasons at the helm.
"The two recruits for the 2010-11 class offer a combination of experience, athleticism, academic excellence and talent," Mowat says. "Meghan and Sarah have been successful high school students and athletes and they are both ready to take their golf games to the division one level and become contributing memebers of our program. I am very excited to work with them as they are both passionate hard workers with great personalities."
Perry, who owns a 3.55 grade-point average on North's 4.0 scale, is a four-year letterwinner for Evansville North and served as a team captain as a senior. An all-city and all-conference first-team selection as a senior in 2009-10, Perry finished in a tie for 19th at the Indiana High School Athletic Association Girl's Golf State Championships. She placed fourth at the Regionals and managed a 79.1 average as a senior. Perry recorded a low 9-hole score of 33 and a low 18-hole mark of 75 as a senior.
In the summer of 2009, Perry won medalist honors at the Optimist Qualifying Tournament, the Evansville Junior Golf Championship and the Indiana Junior Golf event at Oak Meadow. She tied for 12th at the Indiana Section PGA Junior Championship and managed a low summer round of 74. As a high school junior, Perry was named to the all-conference and all-sectional second team, while helping North to qualify for the state championships.
Westaway, who managed a 3.75 GPA as a junior, competed on the Tyson Tour and was champion one season, a three-time Junior Club Champion and a two-time runner up in the Canadian Optimist. A two-time all-district team member, Westaway finished third at the Ladies Club Championships and fifth at the Toronto Star Tournament. She tied for 14th at the 2008 Ontario Golf Championships and second at the 2008 Canadion Junior Optimist Golf Championships. Westaway earned the Tommy White Award for leadership and athletics and was named an Ontario Scholar for her combination of excellence in golf and academics.
In addition to golf, Westaway plays competitive ice hockey in the Provincial Women's Hockey League, which is the highest level of women's hockey in Ontario. She helped her team to a third place finish in the province last season and helped her high school team to a bronze medal at the Ontario High School Championships.
