Vitek Named MAC West Pitcher Of the Week
May 17, 2010 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior right-hander Kolbrin Vitek (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week after his dominating performance against Northern Illinois, the league office announced Monday. This is Vitek's first MAC weekly pitching award this season and his fourth MAC weekly honor this season (three player of the week awards).
Vitek tossed his first career complete game shutout Sunday afternoon to lead the Cardinals to a sweep of NIU and their eighth straight MAC weekend series victory. He worked 9.0 shutout innings and limited NIU to just five hits while striking out a season-high eight batters in 104 pitches. He became the first Cardinal to toss a complete game shutout since former Cardinal Ben Snyder accomplished the feat May 14, 2005 at Marshall.
Vitek's eight strikeouts are a season-high and the most he has recorded since notching 11 last season against Western Michigan (April, 26). With his shutout performance he lowered his ERA to 3.39 on the year, which is third in the MAC this season, while his ERA in MAC games fell to 2.83. He has worked 69.0 innings this year and has struck out 50 batters while walking just 18.
Vitek and the Cardinals return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for their final non-conference game of the regular season against Big Ten foe Michigan. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium.
