Women?s Swimming & Diving Adds Eighth Recruit

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Betsy Bowen (Bremen, Ind./Bremen H.S.) has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the Ball State women's swimming & diving team according to head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill. Bowen is the eighth student-athlete to sign with the Cardinals for the 2010-11 season.
"We are very excited to have such a talented athlete decide to make the jump to the collegiate ranks through Ball State University," said Seibold-Caudill. "Betsy will be joining our sprint group and will be able to come in and make an immediate impact her freshmen year. Due to Betsy's hard work ethic, combined with her dedication to the sport of swimming, we are very confident she will have a highly successful career as a Cardinal."
A four-year letterwinner at Bremen High School for coach Louis Cavadini, Bowen was a five-time state finalist for the Lions. At the 2010 IHSAA state meet, Bowen placed eighth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.44, after posting a personal-best clocking of 52.14 in the prelims. Over her career, Bowen has set school records in eight events, while adding four sectional records.
Bowen claimed 11 sectional championships for the Lions, earning four in the 100 freestyle, three in both the 50 freestyle, three in the 400 freestyle relay and one in the 100 backstroke. A four-time team Most Valuable Performer, Bowen was a 2010 All-State Honorable Mention in the 100 freestyle. She was also named a Speedo NISCA High School All-American in both the 50 freestyle (2008) and 100 freestyle (2010), as well as a Speedo NISCA High School Academic All-American this past spring. In addition to swimming, Bowen competed in cross country and track & field at Berman.
Bowen is also a member of the Concord Swim Club, where she swam for coach Tom Johnson. A medalist in 17 individual and 17 relay events at the Indiana Age Group State Championship Meets, she was also a member of two state championship and one zone championship relays. Bowen has been selected as a Hoosier Girl's State Representative and participated in the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference. A member of the National Honor Society and the Academic Honors Program, she also earned the State of Indiana Work Ethic Gold Certificate.
Bowen is the eighth student-athlete to sign a letter of intent to join the Ball State women's swimming & diving program, joining Jacqueline Iglesias (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora), Cheyanne Jackson (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights), Mallory Miles (Holland, Ind./Southridge H.S.), Haley Richter (Roanoke, Ind./Columbia City), Bridgett Ruehl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell), Stacey Wierman (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Emily Wisolek (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge) who all signed during the early signing period.
