March 09, 2010 | Softball
Defeating Boston (4-8), 3-2, and Radford (5-7), 7-1, Tuesday, the Ball State Cardinals (12-5) are on a five game winning streak in Clearwater, Fla.
Ball State's wins against the Terriers and Highlanders were pitched by Audra Sanders and Elizabeth Milian, respectively. Pitching 10 strikeouts against Radford, Milian, 8-1 this season, has recorded 94 strikeouts this year making her career strikeout count 550. Sanders' win improves her season record to 2-3.
In game one against Boston, the Terriers were shopping for a homerun. Thanks to a third inning dive by Lisa Rozanski into the outfield's blue netting to grab Kelley Engman's fly ball, however, Boston didn't get a homerun until the top of the fourth when April Setterlund notched her fourth of the season.
Setterlund tallied two RBI on the play as her teammate Rachel Moeller, who was on base after opening the inning with a double, also crossed the plate. The fourth inning ended with Caitlin Rentler popping up to Ball State's shortstop, Alicia Barkley, and the Terriers were unable to score for the rest of the game.
Rallying in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals scored three runs. With the bases loaded, Alyssa Collins batted a double hit for two RBI. Following Collins, Barkley hit a line drive to the pitcher and Rozanski, who was on third base, beat the pitcher's throw to first to notch Ball State's third and final run of the game.
Sanders held the Terriers to four hits and two runs and pitched six strikeouts.
In game two against Radford, the Highlanders scored their first and only run in the fourth inning. Kristen Shifflett opened with a single hit, but advanced to third base on an error by Ball State's right fielder, Alyssa Collins. Radford's next batter, Nichole Beall struck out swinging. Shifflett crossed the plate for an unearned run on the next play when Sarah Himan flied out to centerfield. The inning ended with Shannon Keefe grounding out to Barkley.
Jessie Ware began Ball State's answer to Radford's runs in the next inning by slugging a triple out to right centerfield. The next batter, Amanda Montalto, was walked and Hannah Zimmerman entered to pinch run for Montalto. Following Zimmerman's stolen base, Amanda Carpenter doubled to right field for two RBI; she now has eight RBI this season.
The Cardinals picked up four more runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth for a final score of 7-1.
Radford was unable to score an earned run on Milian who allowed just two hits from 23 at bats.
The Cardinals resume play Friday at 11:30 a.m. when they take on the Fairfield University Stags (4-4) in their opening game of the Under Armour Showcase sponsored by the University of South Florida in Clearwater, Fla.
Following the Fairfield game, Radford will take another shot at Ball State at 1:30 p.m.
