Vitek Named Louisville Slugger National Player Of The Week
March 29, 2010 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior right-hander/second baseman Kolbrin Vitek (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) has been named one of the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced Monday. Vitek is joined by Randy Fontanez (South Florida), Jake Overstreet (South Alabama), Noe Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton), Jake Borup (Arizona State) and Jimmy Reyes (Elon) as this week's award winners.
Vitek led the Cardinals to a Mid-American Conference opening series victory at Ohio this past weekend as he was dominant on the mound and at the plate. The right-hander tossed 7.0 shutout innings of two-hit baseball in the Cardinals' 4-0 victory at Ohio Sunday. He limited the Bobcats to only three base runners and none of the three base runners advanced past first base as he struck out five batters and only faced 23 total batters. He combined with two relievers to post the Cardinals' first shutout since 2007 (April 18 at Ohio State) and the first shutout of Ohio at Bob Wren Stadium since 2005 (May 18 - Vanderbilt).
At the plate, Vitek was the offensive catalyst for Ball State as he posted a .500 batting average (6-of-12) in the three-game series. He reached base eight times in the three games, while owning a .571 on-base percentage. He scored three runs, drove in a pair, notched his team-leading fifth home run and stole two bases on the weekend. He leads the Cardinals on the season in batting average (.404), hits (38), runs (26), RBI (22), doubles (8), stolen bases (7) and home runs (5).
Vitek and the Cardinals open the home portion of the 2010 schedule this weekend after playing 23 straight road games to start the year. The Cardinals will host Mid-American Conference rival Miami in a three-game series at Ball Diamond. First pitch Friday afternoon is set for 3 p.m.
