WS&D Places Four On Academic All-MAC Squad

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.), Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and Catherine Ingram (Westfield, Ind./Westfield H.S.) from the Ball State women's swimming & diving program have earned recognition on the 2010 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Team, as voted on by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions.
"I am extremely proud of Emily, Sarah, Maria and Catherine," said Ball State head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill. "These four young women exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete. Not only do they put forth tremendous effort in the pool, but they spend countless hours striving for academic success."
Emily Karwoski, a senior speech pathology major with a 3.56 grade-point average, is a first-time Academic All-MAC honoree. She was also named the MAC Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her career on Jan. 19. She led the Cardinals with 25 points at the 2010 MAC Championships, establishing three school records along the way. Her first school-record came when she swam the second leg for the 200 medley relay which finished sixth with a time of 1:43.82.
Karwoski collected her first individual school record with a mark of 2:04.23 in the 200 individual medley prelims. She would go on to place seventh overall in the event with a time of 2:04.74 in the finals. Karwoski then broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke two times, with a clocking of 1:04.32 in the prelims and 1:04.19 in the finals. Her finals time placed 11th overall. Karwoski also posted the second-fastest individual time in program history in the 200 breaststroke, placing 10th in the finals with a time of 2:18.44.
Sarah Kehe, a senior exercise science major with a 3.88 GPA, earns her first career Academic All-MAC honor for the sport of swimming & diving. A three-sport athlete for the Cardinals, also competing in cross country and track & field, Kehe is now a four-time career Academic All-MAC honoree, also picking up the honor twice for cross country and once for track & field.
Kehe earned a pair of weekly awards this season, being selected as the MAC Swimmer of the Week (Jan. 12) and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week (Jan. 15). She placed 19th at the MAC Championship in the 500 freestyle with the third-best individual time in program history at 5:01.36. Kehe also placed 24th in the 200 freestyle (1:53.19) with the second-fastest on the team this season.
Maria Gramelspacher, a junior education major with a team-high 3.95 GPA, is a first-time Academic All-MAC honoree. Gramelspacher swam the third leg for the 200 medley relay which posted a school-record time of 1:43.82 at the league championship meet.
Individually, Gramelspacher placed sixth in the 200 butterfly at the 2010 MAC Championships with a season-fast time of 2:02.70. She also finished 18th in the 100 butterfly at the MAC Championships with a time of 57.07. Gramelspacher currently holds the school record in the 100 butterfly (55.79) and ranks second in school history in the 200 butterfly (2:01.72), with both times coming at the 2009 MAC Championships.
Catherine Ingram, a junior art and elementary education major with a 3.85 GPA, earned her first selection on the Academic All-MAC squad. She clocked Ball State's third-fastest time of the season in the 200 breaststroke at the 2010 MAC Championship with a season-best effort of 2:26.67 to place 21st overall at the meet.
Ingram also ranked fourth on the team and placed 23rd overall in the 100 breaststroke with a season-fast clocking of 1:08.62 at the MAC Championships. She also posted season-fast times of 2:18.35 in the 200 IM and 4:46.14 in the 400 IM, with her 400 IM time placing 20th at the MAC Championships.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered. A total of 32 student-athletes from the eight league schools which sponsor women's swimming & diving were named to the team.
