Women's Golf Ties for Sixth at UNLV Invitational

Ball State's women's golf team set a school record with a first round 289 at the UNLV Invitational in Boulder Creek, Nev., and ended the tournament tied for sixth in the 18-team field, which inlcuded six nationally ranked teams.
The Cardinals first round 289, which was one over par as a team, was the best 18-hole team score in Ball State women's golf history. The 289 mark broke the previous school standard of 293 set at this fall's Cardinal Classic at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind.
In the 18-team field, Ball State tied for sixth with a 289-302-305=896. The Cardinals tied with Campbell, which entered the tournament ranked 50th in the latest rankings. The nation's 41st ranked UNLV won the event with an 866, followed by Texas (No. 40), Texas Tech (No. 45), Baylor and Missouri.
Brittany Kelly finished third with a school record 72-70-73=215. Kelly, whose 70 marked her season low, finished behind Therese Koelbaek of UNLV (210) and Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho (213). Kelly was one of only three golfers in the 95-player field to finish the tournament under par. The 215 set a Ball State 54-hole school standard, breaking the old mark of 221.
Kristtini Cain led the Cardinals with a career best 69 in the first round and followed that up with a 79-77 to tally a 225 and tie fr 25th in the event. Her 69 tied the Ball State school record for low 18 holes by an individual, which she now shares with teammates Kelly (2007) and Kirsty O'Connor (2009).
O'Connor tied for 25th with Cain after carding a 75-77-73=225. Her 73 was a season low.
Rachael Pruett managed a 74 in the first round and followed it up with a 76-82 for a 232. Freshman Chantelle Hefer, who joined Ball State in January, posted a career best 74 in the first round and followed it up with an 82-84. Katie Windlan, who played as an individual, managed an 83-81-83=247.
The tournament was played on the 6,246-yard, par-72 course.
