Track & Field Concludes Meyo Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team concluded the 2010 Meyo Invitational with 11 student-athletes competing in the final day of the non-scored event, which featured some of the region's top teams, including No. 14 Louisville, and several Mid-American Conference opponents.
Sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was the Cardinals top performer on the day, placing 27th in both the 60m (7.82) and 200m dash (25.31).
Senior Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) led a trio of BSU runners in the 400m dash, crossing the finish line in 28th with a time of 57.33. Freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) and sophomore Renyae Owelsy (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) placed 31st (57.62) and 51st (58.57), respectively, in the event.
Junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) added a 29th-place effort in the 60m hurdles, completing the race in 9.28, after placing eighth in the long jump in the first day of competition.
In the 800m run, sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) posted a time of 2:14.89 to place 33rd, while senior Brittany Ade (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.) finished 60th (2:19.14).
Freshman MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) added a 42nd-place finish in the mile (5:06.61), while Megan Cherry (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) leaped to a distance of 34-00.25 to place 37th in the triple jump.
The Ball State women's indoor track & field team returns to action Friday, when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Hills Invitational.

Day One Results
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - - Women's track & field junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) posted a season-best leap of 19-01.50 in the long jump to lead Ball State's four participants in the first day of the 2010 Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
Lorenz entered the week ranked eighth in the Mid-American Conference in the long jump with a previous best of 18-10. Her effort Friday night helped her place eighth overall in the event and second among league entries.
Freshman Sharise Logwood (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central H.S.) also competed in the long jump for the Cardinals, recording a distance of 16-07.25.
Other Cardinals competing in the first day of the invitational were seniors Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) and Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.). Gilbert placed 17th overall in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:52.59, while Schantz took home 28th in the weight throw with a toss of 48-09.50.
Day two of the 2010 Meyo Invitational begins at 9 a.m. with the 3,000 meter run and concludes at 4:50 with the 4x400 meter relay.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's track & field team continues its 2010 indoor schedule this weekend when it heads for Notre Dame, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational. The two-day event opens at 5 p.m. Friday with the women's long jump. Saturday, competition begins at 9 a.m. with the 3,000 meter run and concludes at 4:50 with the 4x400 meter relay.
Ball State enters the meet fresh off a dominating performance at last weekend's Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational, where the Cardinals posted first-place efforts in eight total events.
BSU sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was the big winner at the meet, collecting first-place efforts in the 60 meter dash (7.77) and the 200 meter dash (25.64). Taylor was also a member of the first-place 4x200 relay which clocked in a 1:44.33.
Taylor was joined on the relay by Erica Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.), Sharise Logwood (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central H.S.) and Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.).
The Cardinals top event of the day was the 60m hurdles, where the team's runners claimed the top three spots. Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) won the race in 8.67, while Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) placed second (8.80) and Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) took third (9.20).
After the first three meets of the season, 10 of BSU's student-athletes rank in the top 20 in the Mid-American Conference rankings, along with one relay squad.
