SATURDAY'S RESULTS:
OXFORD, Ohio - - Despite scoring 58 points on the final day of competition, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team placed eighth at the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Championships with a total of 166 points.
Toledo won the four-day event with 670.5 points, leading from start to finish after dominating the opening day relays. Host school Miami placed second at 572, followed by Ohio (527), Eastern Michigan (453.5), Akron (392), Buffalo (392), Bowling Green (241) and Ball State (166).
Junior Maria Gramelspacher was BSU's top individual performer on the day, posting a time of 2:02.70 in the 200 butterfly to place sixth overall and collect 13 points. In the 200 butterfly consolation finals, sophomore Sara Hostetler added a 15th-place time of 2:07.60 to earn two more points, giving the Cardinals 15 in the event.
Hostetler also opened the scoring for the Cardinals, placing 13th overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.98. The effort was the third-best individual time in program history and netted the Cardinals four points.
Junior Katie Bylsma followed with a 14th-place effort in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 51.42 for three points. The time was a career-fast and the third-best individual effort in BSU history.
Senior Emily Karwoski continued her stellar meet in the 200 breaststroke, placing 10th overall with a career-fast time of 2:18.44 to earn seven points. The effort was just shy of her fourth school record of the meet, placing her second on BSU's chart for the event.
In the three-meter diving competition, sophomore Christina Riordan led the Cardinals with a 13th-place score of 245.85, while Lisa Maertin placed 16th with a score of 228.95, to give the Cardinals four and one points, respectively.
Ball State concluded its scoring with 24 points and a seventh -place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, as Joan Cullen, Nicole Saulters, Jillian Bischoff and Bylsma combined for a time of 3:30.73.
Next up for Ball State divers Maertin and Riordan will be the NCAA Zone Diving meet which will take place March 12-14. Both qualified for the meet on the one-meter board at the 2009 Doug Coers Invitational.

FRIDAY'S FINAL RESULTS
OXFORD, Ohio - - Despite another school-record swim from senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.), the Ball State women's swimming & diving team finished the third day of the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Championships in eighth place with a total of 108 points.
Toledo continues to hold the lead in the eight-team meet with 452 points, followed by host Miami (385), Ohio (348), Eastern Michigan (293), Akron (274), Buffalo (259), Bowling Green (151) and Ball State (108).
After breaking her own school record in the 100 breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:04.32, Karwoski added six more points to the Cardinals team total with an 11th-place swim of 1:04.19 in the finals. The time was 0.13 of-a-second better than her prelim time and helped her improve one spot from her consolation final seed of 12th.
Sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) also scored three points for Ball State, placing 14th in the 100 butterfly with a career-fast time of 56.58, which was 0.07 of-a-second faster than her prelim time earlier in the day and helped her improve two spots from a 16th seed in the consolation finals.
In the three-meter diving preliminaries, sophomore Christina Riordan (Homewood, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor H.S.) placed 13th with a score of 231.40, while senior Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) posted a score of 207.20 to place 16th.
Ball State rounded out the third day of the event with an eighth place time of 3:51.09 in the 400 medley relay finals, as Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), Karwoski, Hostetler and Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) swam for the Cardinals.
Action in the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships concludes tomorrow (Saturday), with finals in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle, 3-meter diving and 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11 a.m., while finals start at 7 p.m.

FRIDAY'S PRELIM RESULTS:
OXFORD, Ohio - - Ball State women's swimming & diving senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) collected her third school record of the week in Friday's preliminary action at the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Miami.
With a school-record time of 1:04.32 in the 100 breaststroke prelims, Karwoski swam her way to the consolation finals heat of the event as the 12th seed. Her time was .45 seconds faster than the previous school record of 1:04.77 set by Emily Haifley at last season's MAC Championship meet.
In Thursday's preliminary action, Karwoski broke the school record in the 200 individual medley (2:04.23) after being a member of the record-setting 200 medley relay (1:43.82) on the first day of competition Wednesday.
In addition to Karwoski, sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) advanced to the consolation finals, posting the 16th-fastest time of the day in the 100 butterfly prelims at 56.65. The effort was a career-fast for Hostetler.
In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) posted the second-fastest time in program history in the prelims at 57.31, but finished just outside the top 16 who advance to the finals.
In other preliminary action, junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) posted a career-fast time of 1:52.35 in the 200 freestyle to place 23rd and lead the Cardinals in the event, while senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) clocked the 18th-best time in the 400 individual medley prelims at 4:35.30 to lead BSU in that event.
Later this afternoon, BSU's divers return to the diving well as they compete on the three-meter board beginning at 2 p.m. This evening, Ball State swimmers will compete in the finals for the 100 butterfly (7:24 p.m.), 100 breaststroke (8 p.m.) and 400 medley relay (9:20 p.m.).

THURSDAY'S FINAL RESULTS:
OXFORD, Ohio - - Thanks to a pair of top-eight performances, the Ball State women's swimming & diving team finished the second day of the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Championships in seventh place with a total of 77 points.
Toledo continues to hold the lead in the eight-team meet with 260 points, followed by Ohio (218), Eastern Michigan (166), Akron (163), Buffalo (156), Miami (150), Ball State (77) and Bowling Green (70).
After posting a school-record time of 2:04.23 in the 200 individual medley prelims earlier in the day, senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) placed seventh in the night's 200 IM championship heat, earning 12 points for the Cardinals with a time of 2:04.74.
Also posting a seventh-place finish for the Cardinals was fellow senior Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central H.S.) who recorded a score of 254.50 on the one-meter diving board.
Rounding out BSU's individual scorers on the day was junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.), who placed 15th in the 50 freestyle consolation heat with a time of 23.72. In her morning prelim swim, Bylsma posted the third-fastest time in program history with at 23.56 to earn her way into the top 16.
The Cardinals rounded out the second day of competition with an eighth-place time of 1:34.93 in the 200 freestyle relay, which was swam by sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), freshman Jennifer Miles (Fishers, Ind./North Central H.S.), freshman Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) and Bylsma.
Day three of the 2009-10 MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships gets underway at 11 a.m. Friday, with preliminary action in the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstoke.

THURSDAY'S PRELIMINARY RESULTS
OXFORD, Ohio - - Two members of the Ball State women's swimming & diving team advanced to the finals in their respective events with solid preliminary swims on the second day of the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Miami at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) was BSU's top performer in the prelims, posting a school record time of 2:04.23 in the 200 individual medley prelims to earn the sixth seed in the championship heat later tonight. Karwoski topped her previous school record of 2:05.56 set at last season's league championship meet.
Junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) also advanced to the finals, posting the third-best individual time in program history in the 50 freestyle with a career-best clocking of 23.56. Bylsma placed 12th overall in the prelims and will compete in the consolation finals heat tonight.
Senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) also etched her name in the BSU record book, posting the third-fastest individual time in program history in the 500 freestyle prelims at 5:01.36. Her effort was the 19th-fastest swim of the day and left her just outside the finals heat.
Later this afternoon, BSU's divers will compete for the first time in the 2009-10 MAC Championship Meet with the 1-Meter Diving prelims set to begin at 1 p.m. The championship final heat for the 200 individual medley is set for 7:28 p.m. this evening, while the consolation final for the 50 freestyle follows at 7:37 p.m.

WEDNESDAY'S FINAL RESULTS
OXFORD, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team ended the first day of the 2009-10 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with a total of 26 points to tie for seventh after two events.
Toledo leads the meet with 80 points, winning both relays on the opening day. Ohio is currently second (68), followed by Miami (60), Akron (58), Buffalo (54), Eastern Michigan (32), BSU (26) and Bowling Green (26).
The Cardinals opened the four-day competition is strong fashion, posting a school-record time of 1:43.82 in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.), junior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and freshman Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) combined to place sixth overall in the event and shatter the previous school record of 1:45.04 set at the 2004-05 MAC Championship meet.
While the Cardinals were on pace to break another school record in the 800 freestyle relay, the team was disqualified when one swimmer jumped early.
Action in the MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships continues Thursday, with preliminary heats in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle beginning at 11 a.m.
