MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team scored wins in three of 13 events to take home second place at Friday's Ball State Quadrangular in the Field Sports Building. Western Michigan won the meet with 168 points, followed by BSU (123.5), Miami (123) and Northern Illinois (81.5).
"Overall, I was very pleased with our team's performance tonight," said Ball State head coach Randy Heisler. "Over the last three meets we have had some really strong showings. Heading into the conference meet you want to see improvement, and tonight, that's what we saw."
Junior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) was the first BSU performer to earn an event victory, posting a time of 8.55 in the 60m hurdlers. Senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) made it a 1-2 Ball State finish in the event, finishing .01 of a second behind Marable at 8.56.
Sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) collected the BSU's second event victory, crossing the finish line in the 200m dash in 25.12 to top Western Michgian's Iris Campbell by .03 of a second.
In the next to last event, redshirt freshman Madeline Goheen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.), who joined the squad at the beginning of the semester, gave the Cardinals their third event win with a time of 10:43.93 in the meet's longest event, the 3,000m run.
Also turning in a solid effort for the Cardinals was junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany), who battled through illness to place second in the long jump (6.01m), third in the high jump (1.65m) and 10th in the shot put (11.66m). Lorenz also earned the sixth spot in the 60m hurdles preliminaries with a time of 9.05, but was unable to compete in the finals.
Lorenz and Johnson were not the only BSU student-athletes to earn runner-up finishes in the meet, as senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) placed second in the mile run (5:00.69) and sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) earn the No. 2 slot in the 800m run (2:14.87).
