Track & Field Places 10th At MAC Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - - Behind a second-place finish from senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) in the 60m hurdles, the Ball State women's track & field team scored 14 points on the final day of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships to place 10th overall in the 12-team field with 25 total points.
Kent State took home the team crown, posting 107 points in the two-day meet, while host Central Michigan was a close second with 100 points. Western Michigan (92) placed third, followed by Miami (79.50), Eastern Michigan (75), Akron (61), Buffalo (46), Toledo (44), Ohio (26.50), Ball State (25), Bowling Green (6) and Northern Illinois (1).
Johnson was the Cardinal's top performer on the second day of competition, earning eight points for her second-place time of 8.50 in the 60m hurdles. Sophomore Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) added one point in the 60m hurdles, placing eighth with a finals time of 8.95.
After placing fifth in the 5,000m run and earning four points on the first day of competition, senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) added three more points on Saturday, with a sixth-place effort in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:09.44.
BSU's final two points of the meet came in the 4x400m relay, as Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.), Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.), Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) and Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) combined for a time of 3:56.02.
Ball State's student-athletes will have one more chance to qualify for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend, with select members will compete in the Notre Dame Invitational, which is the final meet heading into the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held March 12-13 in College Station, Texas.

FRIDAY'S RESULTS
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - - The Ball State women's indoor track and field team scored 11 points during the first day of competition at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships and is currently in eighth place among the 12-team field. The event is being held at Central Michigan's Jack Skoog Track.
Kent State leads the event with 35 points, followed by Western Michigan (29), Miami (31), Western Michigan (29), Central Michigan (26), Akron (20), Toledo (16) Buffalo (12), Ball State (11), Eastern Michigan (9) and Ohio (6).
Junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) opened the meet with a strong showing in the pentathlon, placing third overall with a score of 3,771 to earn six points for the Cardinals. In addition to placing third overall, Lorenz's score of 3,771 was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Among the 20 pentathlon participants, Lorenz placed third in the long jump (5.82m/795 pts), fourth in the shot put (11.77m/646 pts), fifth in the 60m hurdles (9.08/893 pts), 6th in the 800m run (2:29.34/701 pts) and 10th in the high jump (1.60m/736 pts).
Later in the day, Lorenz led the Cardinals in the long jump competition, placing 20th overall with a distance of 5.42m.
Ball State's Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) placed earned a fifth place showing with a final time of 17:31.99 in the 5000 meter run to earn the team four points.
The Cardinals earned one point for an eighth place finish in the distance medley relay with the foursome of Brittany Ade (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.), Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.), Jenna Schmitmeyer (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) and MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) clocking a time of 12:08.42. Ball State beat Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ohio University.
The Cardinals finished the day's finals with Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.) placing 20th in the weight throw.
In preliminary action senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) and junior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) each won their prelim heats in the 60m hurdles to place second (8.63) and third (8.70), respectively, among the eight runners who advanced to the finals.
In the 400m dash prelims, senior Schmitmeyer just missed earning a spot in Saturday's finals heat, placing 10th overall with a time of 58.14. The top nine times advanced to the finals in the event, with 58.11 being the ninth-place time.
Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) along with teammate Johnson finished 15th (25.58) and 16th (25.69), respectively in the 200 meter dash prelims.
Action in the 2010 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships concludes tomorrow, with finals in 12 women's events. Action for the women gets underway at 1:15 p.m. with the finals in the mile run. Field events begin at 1:30 with action in both the high jump and the shot put. The meet is scheduled to conclude at 4:40 p.m. with the women's 4x400 relay.
