Softball Team Wins Season Opener; Suffers Loss in Game Two

Ball State's softball team, the defending Mid-American Conference Champions, won its 2010 season opener by a 4-0 margin over Tennessee Tech before suffering a 6-2 loss to Western Illinois in its second game at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament in Woodstock, Ga.
Game One vs. Tennessee Tech
The Cardinals opened its 2010 season with the win by scoring four runs in the first inning of play led by a three run homerun from Jen Reifschneider.
Lisa Rozanski led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field. Rozanski stole second base and advanced to third on an Alicia Barkley groundout. Jessie Ware's single scored Rozanski to put Ball State ahead 1-0.
Amanda Montalto was hit by a pitch to reach base and then the three run shot by Reifschneider in her first at bat of the season put Ball State ahead 4-0.
Returning MAC Pitcher of the Year, , got the win for Ball State. Milian pitched seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out 13 of the 25 batters she faced in the season opener.Elizabeth Milian
Rozanski led the Cardinals with two hits and two stolen bases. Ware and Freiling each had one stolen base. Montalto was hit by a pitch in each of her three plate appearances.
Game Two vs. Western Illinois
The Ball State Softball team dropped its second game of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in a disappointing 6-2 loss to Western Illinois.
In the top of the first inning, Collins singled and advanced on a single by Barkley. Collins then advanced on Ware's fielder's choice. Ware stole second base, and Collins scored on a catcher's error.
Western Illinois took a 6-1 lead before Ball State scored again in the top of the seventh inning when Sadie Robertson doubled to centerfield. Amanda Carpenter pinch ran for Robertson and scored on an error by the second baseman. Carpenter's run brought the score to 6-2, which would be the final score.
Rozanski and Montalto led the Cardinals' offense with two hits apiece. Ware and Hannah Zimmerman each collected a stolen base on the night.
The Cardinals will face Mercer and Kennesaw State at Twin Creeks Softball Complex in the second day of the tournament, which will conclude Sunday.
