Eric Steger Named Golf's IGA Player of the Year
December 08, 2010 | Men's Golf
Eric Steger, a senior member of the Ball State men's golf team, has been named the Indiana Golf Association John K. David Player of the Year for a second straight season.
The highlight of Steger's IGA season was his win at the Indiana Amateur Championship when he became a part of the only father-son duo to hold the Indiana Amateur Championship title. His father and Ball State former golf letterwinner, Scott Steger, won it in 1975 before becoming a PGA member.
At the State Amateur, Steger managed a 67-70-72-68=277 and won the event on the first playoff hole. He won the Indianapolis Open and the IGA Four Ball. Steger also tied for second at the Indiana Open and the Monticello Open and tied for third at the IGA Public Links Championships.
In addition, Steger qualified for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championships and advanced out of the first two rounds of stroke play. He also qualified for the 2009 U. S. Amateur Championships and was tied for ninth after two rounds of stroke play.
This past fall, Steger competed in four events for Ball State and leads the team with a 71.58 average. He managed a low score of 69 three times and tallied three top-10 finishes. He finished second at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, tied for ninth at the Renaissance Invitational and third at the Bearcat Invitational.
