Women's Basketball Defeats SIUE 66-60

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Ball State University women's basketball team improved its overall record to 4-3 Sunday afternoon after defeating SIU-Edwardsville (2-5) 66-60 at the Vadalabene Center.
For the game senior forward Emily Maggert led all scorers with 21 points, she was also one shy of her career high in rebounds with 16 boards. Junior forward Suzanne Grossnickle chipped in nine points while senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning ended the day with eight. Junior center Amber Crago came off the bench to add seven points and teammate freshman guard Brandy Woody also had seven.
Ball State opened the second half up by six (34-28) after a layup from Maggert. The Cardinals led up until the 11:29 mark when the Cougars tied the game 40-40 with a pair of free throws. After the tie, the game became much like the first half as both teams traded baskets. Late in the second half Ball State managed to build a 54-46 cushion over the Cougars after a combination of scoring that included baskets from true freshmen Katie Murphy and Woody along with free throws from Maggert.
The Cardinals late second half scoring surge along with making 10 straight free throws down the stretch earned Ball State the road victory over SIUE.
Freshman Jazmin Hitchens opened the game with a jumper to give the Cardinals the early 2-0 lead over the Cougars. The game was knotted at 9-9 at the 14:39 mark before SIUE went on a 6-0 run to go up 15-9 over Ball State. Back-to-back baskets from Maggert snapped the Cougars scoring streak. Both teams traded baskets the remainder of the half, Ball State headed into intermission with a 32-28 advantage over SIUE after freshman Jordan Huber knocked down a three pointer with a minute remaining.
At the half, Maggert had scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds which marked her 26th double-double of her career and fourth of the season.
The Ball State University women's basketball team continues its two game road trip when it travels to Illinois State Thursday for a 7 p.m. EST tipoff.
